Big Wins 2017: Climate and Energy

Posted on diciembre, 23 2017

Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, but also the third most vulnerable to climate change, according to the United Nations. This combination requires commitments to propel a model for economic growth that is more conscious and responsible with the environment and is marked by climate-smart actions.

Earth Hour continues to build awareness and engagement on climate changes. This year, more than 50,000 Colombians turned off their lights during Earth Hour, as done traditionally, and at least 8,000 joined bike rides organized in partnership with local governments in 11 cities. As part of WWF-Colombia’s most recent initiative, “Móntate al Cambio” (Ride the change), three universities (two in Bogotá and one in Cali) established mobility systems for their campuses, made up of 20 bicycles and parking spaces, six months of administration for the system, and a year of insurance.

Given the direct impact of mobility on the quality of life of cities and its influence on climate change, WWF-Colombia challenged public and private organizations in six cities in the country (Pereira, Montería, Ibagué, Pasto, Popayán and Bucaramanga) to encourage employees to travel to their workplaces in a more sustainable manner and measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of their trips. Upon measuring emissions, Pereira won the challenge with a net reduction of 36.3 kg of CO2, which is equivalent to that which 30 cars would produce in a single day.

Likewise, being aware of the co-responsibility of industries in the reduction of GHG emissions, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, with support from WWF-Colombia and USAID, identified and examined the key places along logistics and transportation processes with the greatest potential for emissions reductions. These organizations identified a series of specific measures that, if implemented, would allow Colombian industries to improve their energy performance –and thus their competitiveness– and meet the 20% emissions reduction goal set for 2030.
